The Story Behind iplicit: How a Better Finance System Came to Life
iplicit was born out of years of experience, a fair bit of frustration with old-fashioned finance systems, and a simple idea: that businesses deserved something better.
Its story starts with founder Ian Andrews, who spent more than 20 years working in ERP and finance software through his company, Concept Software, one of the UK’s leading ERP implementation consultancies. During that time, Ian worked closely with organisations rolling out complex systems, and he saw the same issues crop up again and again: projects taking too long, costs spiralling, systems being far too complicated, and lots of customisation needed just to make things work properly.
After years of helping organisations implement existing finance platforms, Ian spotted a clear gap in the market. Mid-sized organisations were often stuck in the middle. Basic accounting packages weren’t powerful enough as they grew, while big enterprise systems were expensive, disruptive and difficult to implement. Ian believed there had to be a better way; a modern, cloud-based finance platform that gave businesses the functionality they needed but without the usual costs and headaches.
That idea started to take shape in 2013, when Ian began developing a new generation of finance software built around flexibility, scalability and simplicity. Instead of relying on heavy customisation, iplicit was designed to be highly configurable from the start, giving organisations the freedom to shape the system around the way they work, while still benefiting from a modern cloud platform.
The next big step came when Ian joined forces with experienced software entrepreneur Lyndon Stickley and the team behind Exchequer, including Rob Steele. The Exchequer team had already built one of the UK’s most respected accounting systems, so bringing that experience together created a strong foundation for iplicit’s next stage of growth.
Together, they saw a huge opportunity. Thousands of organisations were still using outdated, on-premise finance systems that simply weren’t keeping up with the way modern businesses operate. iplicit was created to give those organisations a practical route to the cloud. It had powerful financial management, real-time reporting, automation and integrations, but without the usual barriers that come with enterprise software.
Since launching in 2019, iplicit has grown quickly and now supports organisations across a wide range of sectors, including education, not-for-profit, property, technology and professional services. At its heart, the focus is still the same: helping finance teams move away from manual processes, clunky systems and disconnected data, so they can spend less time wrestling with spreadsheets and more time adding real value to their organisation.
Having firmly established itself as one of the UK’s fastest-growing cloud finance platforms, iplicit is now focused on building on that success. With a strong customer base, a mature product offering and a growing partner network, the next phase is centred on enhancing the platform’s capabilities, driving innovation and delivering even greater value to finance teams.
Continued investment in automation, AI, integrations and intelligent finance functionality will play a key role in this evolution. As organisations seek to reduce manual processes, improve visibility and make faster, data-driven decisions, iplicit is committed to developing technology that empowers finance teams to work more efficiently and strategically.
Rather than simply replacing legacy accounting software, iplicit is continuing to redefine what modern cloud finance can deliver, combining enterprise-grade functionality with the flexibility, usability and innovation that today’s growing organisations expect.
